Calling Australia homeWelcome to the 7 October 2008 enewsletter

In times of financial market uncertainty we start to see some of the downsides of globalisation. Bills are (initially) rejected by the American senate - and the Australian stock market plunges. For ordinary people on fixed incomes it can all seem fairly incomprehensible. Ignoring bad financial news, however, is usually the worst strategy, so this week we highlight the work of financial counsellors for those who believe they are facing difficulties they can no longer handle alone. On the topic of money, Geoff’s blog is a wonderful reminder of the difference between worldly wealth and the things that really matter.
In an effort to turn our attention from global concerns back to simpler pleasures, this week we are celebrating just some of the great (and affordable) experiences Australia has to offer.
One of our favourite icons is the Australian Women’s Weekly and this week we review a new book which celebrates the AWW’s 75 years of publication. We’ve also unearthed a great new book which lists 1015 peak Australian activities and share just a couple. Our travel links include affordable camping and some excellent discounts on Tasmanian tours, whilst in Comfort Food, Ellie’s Meat Pie offers a welcome snack.
And for those who now feel the need to work longer and retire later, a proposed amendment to the Age Discrimination Act should make a real difference.
All the best
