Men's health

Welcome to the 03 June @boutSeniors enewsletter.

In this issue of AboutSeniors enewsletter we get down and serious about men's health and wellbeing. What is it about blokes that they "don't talk" and definitely don't visit the doctor often enough? Well we believe this is changing - and the increase in men's sheds is sign that they love a chat - in safe company. International Men's Health Week is a good reason for an update on what you can do to live longer - a striking example of independent older age was highlighted this week when Mrs Doreen Washington turned 110 - one of 2,860 Australians of the new breed of supercentenarians. And enjoy our link to recent research which reveals longevity is increased by intergenerational contact - well it is for fruit flies, at least.

We all know, despite advances in longevity, the only thing certain is death and taxes. Next week we will be offering special tips to maximise your tax return pre-June 30, so stay tuned for that special enews, meanwhile this week Geoff has written a special blog on "moments of death".

Thanks to the hundreds of subscribers who have responded to our poll on fuel prices - a solid 76% of you feel Dr Nelson is onto something with his proposed fuel tax cut - and even more of you feel the ACCC is NOT effective! If you haven't recorded your thoughts yet, the poll (and DVD prizes) will run for another week.

In praise of older men is Debbie's review of the latest "Raider" epic with a very buff Harrison Ford defying the grasp of the KGB as he races around the globe - go Harrison, we say!

Congratulations to Kay who is our first weekly winner is the winter warmer soup competition - enjoy her recipe for Baked Potato and Bacon soup tonight. And special thanks to Sheila who reminded us that "affordable" is indeed in the eye of the beholder - with parsnips selling for $11.98 a kilogram, our Curried Parsnip Soup was anything but affordable. Good call Sheila, we'll do our research better next time.

Keep laughing
