01 October VOL 07 Issue 23

Thanks to the grandparents

Welcome to the 01 October @boutSeniors enewsletter.

It's time to celebrate the family members who give us so much of their time and energy – the grandparents. Whether they help with babysitting, daycare or – more frequently these days – taking on full responsibility for raising their grandchildren, contemporary society can no longer ignore their importance.

But no matter how involved they are in day-to-day rearing of children, one thing's for certain: grannie and grandpa are not merely lolly-givers or weekend visitors. Our grandparents are important storytellers, the keepers of our past, our stories and our wisdom. This issue @boutSeniors pays tribute to our family elders.

Victorian seniors will be excited to experience the upcoming Seniors Festival Seminar Series program. It's never too late to learn something and there is something for everyone here: the six seminars cover everything from connecting with community to computers. For more information, click here

@boutSeniors subscribers are in for a treat! Our wonderful friends at Koonara Wines have created a special deal just for you. To read the story behind Koonara's recent vintage, click here. To access the special deal, click here

Perhaps your grandmother made you a childhood treat in the form of Aeroplane Jelly. This issue, we couldn't resist celebrating Aeroplane Jelly's 80 th birthday. The iconic jingle, “I like Aeroplane Jelly, Aeroplane Jelly for me…” is said to be as familiar as the national anthem! And apparently the song was also an unofficial password for Aussie soldiers during the Vietnam War.

A slightly healthier meal from an era not forgotten is the humble rissole. Read grandmother Betty's recipe now. This month our October DVD giveaway is the ever-popular Ballykissangel. To enter, answer our poll question on children and inheritance by clicking here.

To all the grandparents in the world, we salute you!

Keep smiling
David and Kaye Fallick

Betty's rissoles
Some of the tastiest dishes are those born of frugality – a.k.a. the fine art of cooking leftovers. My mum's rissoles are a case in point. Betty would cook roast lamb on Sunday, and Monday night we would enjoy her rissoles, with gravy, mashed potatoes and peas. Read the recipe now
