University of the Third Age

Universities of the Third Age, or U3As as they are more often called, are voluntary, non-profit organisations which aim to offer older people low-cost educational opportunities that operate in a pleasant, supportive social setting. There are no formal entry requirements, no examinations and no “awards”. U3As are built on the premise that, collectively, older people have the skills & knowledge to provide learning for themselves.

Maintaining Independence

This is a course about positive action! The purpose is to give you tools and information you can use to maximise your physical and mental health and wellness to maintain your quality of life and independence. You don’t have to have an illness or disability to benefit from it and even if you don’t need all the information presented, being aware may enable you to assist someone else in need.

This is a practical course which is relevant Australia wide and, with a little research into available resources, has potential for use world wide. It will be useful for international learners as even though Government services may vary between countries, most of the areas this course covers are relevant and not geographically limited.

Spread the word

Have you ever wondered how it happened that the English word for something looks or sounds very much like the word for the same thing in a far-off foreign language?

To take an example, “foreign” in English means about the same as the word which transliterates from Arabic script into “farang” in the Pushtu language of Afghanistan.

If you have ever thought about any of these questions, then you will, I hope, find this course both interesting and entertaining.
· Unit 1: Origins
· Unit 2: Old English
· Unit 3: Middle English 1150-1500AD
· Unit 4: Early Modern English
· Unit 5: The Enlightenment 1650-1800
· Unit 6: Modern English since 1750 (1)
· Unit 7: Modern English since 1750 (2)
· Unit 8: English in Society (1)
· Unit 9: English in Society (2)
· Unit 10: English as an International Language
