Male osteoporosis study
One in three men in Australia over the age of 60 will develop an osteoporotic fracture. Can you help research by participating in a clinical drug trial.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Austin Health and Royal Melbourne Hospital are looking for men with osteoporosis, aged 65 years or older, to participate in a clinical drug trial. The drug is currently registered for the treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. The aim of the trial is to test the effectiveness of this treatment for osteoporosis in men.
Trial participants will be randomly allocated to receive either the trial medication or placebo (an inactive substance) and in line with research standards will not know which group they have been allocated to.
If you, or someone you know is a male, aged 65 years or older and answers YES to one or more of the following questions, then development of osteoporosis may be a risk, and this trial may be suitable for you/them.
- Do you have a family history of osteoporosis?
- Have you ever had a low trauma fracture?
- Are you a heavy smoker?
- Do you have a low body weight?
- Have you noticed a change in your posture or are you shorter
than you used to be?
To find out if you/they may be eligible for this trial, please call the Research Nurse at the participating Hospital closest to you:
Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital – Research Nurse: 03 9496 3600 -
Royal Melbourne Hospital, Parkville – Research Nurse: 03 8344 3252 -
This study has been approved by Austin Health & Melbourne Health Human Research Ethics Committees.
Hear all

Finally a hearing aid that listens, thinks and talks!
A new hearing aid called the Velocity™ is now available that automatically adjusts as the wearer moves from quiet to noisy environments and when they pick up the phone. It even “talks” into the ear of the wearer, providing important information in a friendly voice!
The Velocity™ hearing aid allows the wearer to be reading at home, then head off to a busy shopping centre, watch a movie and answer their telephone during the course of a day, without ever having to think about, or adjust, their hearing aids.
HEARINGLife are offering FREE “Home Trials” of the Velocity™ at all of their clinics throughout Victoria.
For more information, or to arrange a FREE trial, call 1300 134 097 to be connected to your nearest clinic.
Healthy Heart

Help put the heart back into Valentine’s Day and support the Heart Foundation’s Share Your Care campaign.
The Heart Foundation are urging all Australians to let people in their life, other than romantic partners, know they care.
Scientific evidence shows that loneliness and isolation are risk factors for heart disease, with cardiovascular disease claiming the life of one Australian every 10 minutes and as single households are on the increase, it’s more important than ever to reach out to those on their own.
Use Valentine’s Day as a time to let other people know that they are valued and part of a community. Connect with family, friends, work mates or neighbours through simple acts.
Tips to Share Your Care this Valentine’s Day (and everyday):
Introduce yourself to your neighbours
Ask a work mate about their weekend
Host a Valentine’s Day dinner with friends (single or not!) to raise money for the Heart Foundation
Meet three new people in your local community
Phone or write to an old friend
Send a card or hand-written letter to your family and friends.
Visit a sick friend or help out a neighbour.
Donate to the Heart Foundation in the name of your loved one by dialling 1300 55 02 82
Conduct a random act of kindness - put a couple of coins in a near-expired meter or bake some healthy muffins for workmates
