Protect your privacy

image

Most of us give our personal information freely, without really understanding what’s its needed for, and the reason it is requested, and sometimes the small print is just too small or the printed information too difficult to understand.

More than 800,000 Victorians have a print disability, either blindness or a difficulty in reading or understanding printed information. As the amount of private information collected increases, and the transfer of this information becomes easier, it’s never been more important to protect the way in which such information is used.

At some point everyone has disclosed personal and health information without truly understanding why. A new communications campaign has been launched as a joint initiative of Privacy Victoria and the Office of Health Services Commissioner, working with Vision Australia, to ensure those least likely to be able to read the small print, are not disadvantaged by giving over their personal information.

Guest speaker at the launch was Graeme Innes, Australian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commissioner. Given his blindness, Graeme Innes is perfectly placed to explain the importance of understanding how personal information can be used, how your rights can be protected, what course of action is available should privacy rights be violated.

Should you have any question about privacy laws and rights, you can contact the Privacy Victoria’s Privacy Advice and Referral Line 1300 666 444. The telephone line is available 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday, and uses telephone interpreting services where required. Find out more about other, more suitable formats of privacy rights information.
