Nelson Mandela turns 90

image

Well known performers including Will Smith, Annie Lennox and Queen helped Nelson Mandela to celebrate his 90th birthday in a fund-raising concert at Hyde Park last Friday night (local time). The concert also marked a 20-year anniversary of a concert at Wembley Stadium which raised awareness about Mandela’s imprisonment, giving birth to the anthem “Free Nelson Mandela”. Proceeds from the concert will go the Mandela’s charity 46664, named after his prisoner number, and created to fight the spread of AIDS worldwide. Imprisoned for his fight against apartheid in South Africa, Mandela spent a total of 27 years behind bars on Robben Island. It is a credit to his determination and attitude that he not only survived the brutality of the South African prison system, but that he went on to lead his nation after his release.
Send your best birthday wishes to “Madiba” (an honorary title for elders) as Nelson Mandela is also known and watch the concert here.

Our favourite Dame

image

The second of Andrew Denton’s “Elders” series (ABC1 Monday, 9.30pm) featured the redoubtable Dame Elizabeth Murdoch. A young-at-heart 99-year-old she proved that age is indeed a state of mind – and there really is nothing like a Dame. Denton’s interview ranged far and wide but the most touching moments were her thoughts on loving and losing her daughter, Helen.

Private health insurance responses

So far 574 subscribers to the AboutSeniors website poll on private health insurance have responded and their responses show a clear majority of readers, 85%, are privately insured. Sadly for the Federal Government 79% of respondents think the initiative to remove the 1% Medicare levy surcharge for singles with incomes up to $100,000 and families with incomes up to $150,000 not privately insured for health, is not a good initiative. Only 12% of respondents said they would leave their private health insurance fund because of these changes.

Dr Nelson on a winner with seniors

AboutSeniors fuel prices poll shows a clear majority favour Dr Nelson’s plan to cut 5 cents a litre. So far 630 subscribers to the AboutSeniors website poll on fuel prices have responded, with nearly 74% agreeing with Dr Nelson’s suggestion. Sadly for the Federal Government only 22% think the Fuel Watch scheme will offer a reasonable solution, just 7.8% believe the ACCC is doing enough to ensure fair prices will prevail, and only 28% believe rising fuel costs are a fact of life and we should accept them.
